◎ Background/History:

- Mahabharata Synopsis
- Launcher, Fate/Extra CCC
- Lancer of Red, Fate/Apocrypha

◎ Personality: From the Indian epic Mahabharata, Karna was born through the union of the daughter of a human king Kunti and a Sun God, Surya. Despite coming from such noble birth, Karna's lineage was unknown to him after having been cast away by his human mother. This left Karna unable to learn or understand the ways of human emotions, remaining coldly stoic and calm though could be perceived as cruel. Not that Karna truly holds any ill will towards others, he simply accepts everyone for who they are and views the events and happenings around him as typically normal.

This disposition is what helped him survive through the many curses placed upon him throughout his life, Karna never hating or blaming anyone for what happened to him, living and dying while having accepted everything. This remains true even after his death in the Mahabharata, becoming a heroic spirit of legend and thus able to be summoned as a servant of the Lancer class. As a servant, Karna is considered to be top class due to abilities, attributes, and dedicated loyalty to his Master.

Karna: …If that’s your order, I will obey. By the tyranny of my spear, Hakuno Kishinami will be burnt away to nothing. If you declare that the dark flame within you will not vanish until it burns you up with it, Jinako, then I will be the shroud that guards you from the wind and rain.

No matter the order given and Karna's personal feelings on it, he will always and carry out any command of his Master's. Even if those orders range from things as simple as driving others away from talking to his Master or directly disobeying the rules of a Holy Grail War. This is because while Karna has a great loyalty towards his Master, he also has great care towards them and their well being.

With both his Master Jinako Carigiri and his unknown Master under the Red Faction, Karna honestly worries about them and their health. In terms of Jinako who locks herself away and spends her days playing games and eating junk food, Karna hopes she would get more exercise as he's concerned with her increasing body mass...that and she purposefully isolates herself with only him as company that whenever anyone else comes to visit her, he urges them to return even if Jinako herself, voices she doesn't want anyone to bother her.

Karna: …I thank you. I can’t cooperate with you, but as you can see, Jinako is a lonely person. Come back again.

With his Master in the Red Faction, Karna realizes that he is a hard to handle servant due to all of his skills requiring high amounts of Magical Energy. It's troublesome for him as he notes how a regular Magus wouldn't be able to function properly, unable to lift even a finger -- even a highly skilled, first-rate Magus would become exhausted while attempting to support him as their servant. This causes him to worry about his Master but is ultimately relieved there haven't been any complaints sent his way about it.

Though Karna's devotion to his Master sometimes comes at a price. Without a second thought, Karna protected the afraid Jinako from dying at the sacrifice of himself. While Jinako herself doesn't see why he would given how much greater Karna is as a heroic spirit while she isn't, Karna could never see it the same way. He confesses that he's a bad judge of character as he typically sees everyone as the "same value". No one person is above or below another to him, no matter how "annoying, lazy, or incompetent" one might be, they are more than worth being saved to him. In particular, Karna saved Jinako from the Holy Grail War simply because she was his Master.

Jinako: You saved some mediocre person like me as if it was just the natural thing to do. So — even if I’m just as no good as I’ve always been, forever?

Karna: Of course. Even if you’re nothing special, as long as you live, I will continue to be your guardian.

Karna's self-sacrifice is just one of his many of what could be considered charitable aspects. Known as the "Hero of Charity", Karna wants for nothing for himself, often giving unto others rather than taking. His intentions are always stated clearly and honestly, as shown during his interlude where given the task to get bread for Dr. Roman, Karna goes as far to travel back to France for flour and in the process...gets caught in the middle of a dispute between village people and bandits who raided them.

Though it wasn't his intention wasn't originally to save the village people, after hearing of their plight, Karna understands that it's an urgent matter and doesn't hesitate to offer his help. Even after defeating the bandits and being showered with gratitude from the rescued villagers, Karna denies that he did anything special and it was just the natural thing to do. (As a side note, he also only takes as much flour as he needs and pays the appropriate market value for it.)

It doesn't seem as if Karna really wishes or wants for anything and while that may be true on a material aspect, Karna sees worth in a good opponent. Even if he's a typically calm presence through battle, Karna genuinely enjoys facing off against a worthy heroic spirit. One of his more notable bouts being against the Saber of Black, Siegfried. Siegfried stirred something within Karna even before they dueled, Karna being starkly reminded of someone else through Siegfried's gaze and thus, wanting to face him properly. The fight was so evenly matched and lasted well through the night until near sunrise, ultimately ending in a draw -- which left Karna with the wish that they could fight again.

I must say... luck has been on my side. I am grateful from the bottom of my heart that the first of my battles was with you, Saber of Black.

Who Siegfried reminded Karna of was his half-brother, Arjuna. The two brothers were cursed and fated to face off against each other, always searching for one another when summoned into to fight in a Holy Grail War. It's not until North America, that they meet and Karna agrees while confessing that he too, has as much of an "incurable disease" as Arjuna.

Arjuna who is solely focused on facing Karna now that he's found him no longer has any interest in the world, not caring if it's destroyed while Karna is the exact opposite. "So long as there are those who wish to live, I shall be their protector. That is why I was granted this power. My father, as long as I live, may the sun be everlasting." Though Karna was the "villain" in their epic lore, he is likened to "goodness" while Arjuna is his "evil" -- but they are absolutely equal to each other and no matter hte time or place, they will always find each other to fight until there's a victor.

Karna: We share an unfortunately unbreakable bond, but we have known each other longer than anyone. Therefore, in deference to that fate, let us make a promise. When it comes the time for you to shoot me, do so fulfilling your duty as a Heroic Spirit. Use the Roar of the Blazing God, the Agni Gandiva, to save the world.

Karna is someone who was actually quite shaped by the people in his life, both before his death in the Mahabharata and after as a heroic spirit. While suffering many misfortunes at the hands of others, Karna simply accepted everything. It may have made him socially and emotionally ignornant and oblivious to others, but in turn...Karna learned to hold all life as equal. He learned to protect and save, even if the cost is himself. He learned to devote himself mind, body, and soul to his Master, no matter what quality of Master they may be and to accept and carry out any orders that they would give him -- simple because he is a heroic spirit and a servant.

◎ Powers/Abilities: As a servant, Karna has unique abilities that come with it. First and foremost, servants of heroic spirits are typically unable to be harmed by regular means by anyone else other than opposing servants or magus. Regular weapons (knives, swords, guns, etc.) have little to no effect on them though weapons potentially imbued with magical properties may have some effect.

Like any other summoned heroic spirit, Karna has the ability to materialize in both a physical form and particle form, appearing as golden sparkles of light which allow him to move freely around, in the air, and through walls. -- This is usually done at the request of a Master though each servant has their own preference on how they might want to present themselves.

On top of that, a Master and a servant also have the unique ability to communicate telepathically once a contract has been confirmed between the two.
